You may be thinking St. John is an odd name for a horror comic, and
you'd be right. St. John is the publishing company I'm featuring today. Well,
featuring may be a strong word as I'm only going over a few of their books
with a common thread.
First is Weird Horrors which ran for 9 issues in 1953-1953. Like most horror
comics of the time, it's an anthology series with each issue having several
short stories.
After Weird Horrors nine issues, the numbering switched over to Nightmare
until number 13. I still don't know why companies would keep the numbering and
change the title. I should probably look that up sometime. How great is this
cover by Joe Kubert? The guy kind of reminds me of Cain from DC's House of Mystery.
Issue 14 becomes Amazing Ghost Stories and ironically, contains no stories
with ghosts! That's because the final three issues in this lineage are
reprints. This one from Nightmare (not the same one above, but a different
publisher) and the others are of Weird Thrills, both originally published by
Ziff-Davis.
All these comics are legally available for free on
Comic Book+. You can
read them online or, if you create a free account, you can download them. The
are usually in cbr or cbz format. You'll need a program to read them (I use
CDisplay) or you can unzip them and view the individual pages.
