Disney Doorables - Haunted Mansion

Disney Doorables is a series of blind packed characters that are around 1.5 inches tall with big, glittery eyes. This line has been going for years and while Mrs Dex has picked up the occasional Beauty & the Beast or Frozen set, I haven't paid much attention to them until this recent Amazon exclusive set. I didn't even know this was a thing until it appeared on my doorstep. Thanks, Mom!

Doorables are so named because there's usually a door involved, either in the packaging or a mini-playset, and they're adorable. I would love it if they'd do a mini Mansion playset! Or better yet, a series of connectable mini playsets.

Let's go around the back...

World's Smallest Headless Horseman

This year we're bringing back Headless Horseman Day, or Headless HorseMonday! What better way to kick it off than with the smallest thing possible?

Super Impulse has been cranking out the World's Smallest line for awhile with things ranging from action figures to working video games to classic board games and toys. I wasn't lucky enough to find a Mego Headless Horseman when it came out but I guess having a reeeally tiny one is better than none at all, right?

The exterior packaging seems to be put together in a way that makes it impossible to open without destroying it. But maybe you need tough packaging when you have small things that could easily fall into someone's pocket.

So just how small is World's Smallest?

Considering the size, they've done an outstanding job on everything including the packaging. There's a door on the back that lets you take out the figure and be able to put it back inside. They get a lot of points for that! In this series (Horror 2) there's also the Fly and the Mummy. There's also sets for classic and modern Universal horror figures, but no Creature as of yet.

The butler from the LEGO Haunted Mansion set stopped by to show you just how small this Horseman is. The figure has articulation on the arms and head and comes with a stand and sword. Although I'll be darned if I can figure out how to get the small sword into his itty bitty hand!

While I was messing around with him, I discovered that his head comes off! I mean, what good would a Headless Horseman be if his head didn't come off, right? It also explained why his right arm was in an odd position. Now if I could just get that sword in the other hand...

Halloween Hot Wheels 2022 - Scorcher

2022 is a bit of an odd year for Halloween Hot Wheels. The good news is they spruced up the cards. Usually, there is a single card back that's used for that year's Halloween line. This year, each card showcases the specific vehicle.
The bad news is this a year of re-releases. While some cars have come back into the mix with different paint schemes before, they just straight up re-used cars from previous years! I wish I'd dug into this before I opened them because it would saved me some time taking photos of them.

Not going to lie, this is kind of a kick to the ol' Halloween jewels. The Halloween Hot Wheels are one of the things I look forward to the most every year and re-releasing the exact same ones sucks some of the fun out of it. I may just order another set to have carded, otherwise there's no difference from the ones previously released.

Another interesting thing they've done this year is with the bubble. Normally, it's just formed around the car and while that's still true, the Halloween releases all have this rectangle around them as well. It does make it look a little nicer. Since these are straight repacks, there's not really a reason to open them if you've been collecting them over the years.

Scorcher is a re-release from the 2017 Happy Halloween series. You can read what I thought of it back then in this 2017 blog post.

Monthly Media Recap - September 2022

The Countdown to Halloween starts tomorrow, so the monthly recap goes up a day early. As usual, links below are Amazon affiliated and will drop some pennies in my coffers for your order. The holiday season is coming up fast, go buy stuff!

Be sure to swing by tomorrow for details on the annual Halloween contest!

The sequel to the WNUF Halloween Special! I ordered this as soon as it went up but never got around to watching it. Luckily, creator Chris LaMartina is taking it on the road and I got so see it with an audience. I don't want to give anything away about it but I will say it's a blast from the 90s past! Highly recommend seeing it in a theater (or at least with a group) if you have the chance.

Rating: 9/10

With a title like this, I completely expected this to be another bottom of the barrel Amazon horror offering. Maybe it was my low expectations but I was very pleasantly surprised! There's no wraparound with this anthology, just seven, some funnier than other, horror shorts. Quite a bit of it felt like a weird Goosebumps for adults by way of Troma. I don't think it'll make anyone's "best of" list but I had a good time with it.

Rating: 7/10

Monthly Media Recap - August 2022

Here we are two months until Halloween! Things will probably be a little quiet on here for the next month as I'll be putting my normal blog time towards cranking out 31 posts for the blogger Countdown to Halloween.

There's quite a few trailers this month because some of these just have to be seen!

Streaming Series

I happened to catch a recent ad for this on the CW so decided to check it out from the start over the past couple months. It's like Cops with a workplace camera crew but they're dealing with supernatural things. The main characters are not the smartest but it makes it that much funnier to see their encounters.

Midnight Mass (2022, Netflix)
Late to the game here despite hearing great things about it. Definitely a slow burn but once it's lit, there's no putting it out! The religious crazy combined with the horror elements is very well done. I'm not the biggest fan of the monster type featured (no spoilers) but this actually got me to enjoy them. Highest of recommends!

LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation (2022, Disney+)
This was kind of cute. Definitely not canon as it hops all over the timeline. I'm not thrilled with how the Galactic Cruiser Halcyon is being pushed into everything because it just feels like marketing synergy. I know, I know, that's what Star Wars does but it starts to feel really forced (ha) after a comic series, this special, and another upcoming novel set there.

Light & Magic (2022, Disney+)
If you have any interest in special effects, this is a must watch. It's pretty amazing all the things that have come out of ILM being formed. It was awesome to see all these people whose names I knew growing up talking about their experiences at ILM. It's got some great home movie footage of them at work and even the odd Star Wars behind the scenes stuff I haven't seen before.

Star Wars Black Series - Nalan Cheel

Who knew it was going to be a cantina band member that got me to order a figure from Hasbro Pulse? I just had to get him!

Why this one? What is it about a cantina band guy? As a kid, there were three figures I felt were sorely missing from the original Kenner Star Wars line-up: the Rebel Fleet Trooper, Tarkin, and the cantina band! They had Hammerhead and Snaggletooth, aliens that were barely in the movie, but no band!?

Fan Expo Boston 2022

This past weekend Mrs Dex and I attended Fan Expo Boston, our first comic convention since the Covid hit. These things have been around for decades and they still have co-ordination issues. I'm not saying I could do it better, just that they should have figured some stuff out by now.

For example, here is a section of the autograph area. It's not even the part that was really crowded. If you wanted an autograph (whether or not you pre-purchased it) you had to stand in line. Which is fine, that's unavoidable. They sold a lot more Ming-Na Wen auto tickets than expected and to keep her line down, they were handing out numbered tickets. They would then update the whiteboard near her line saying if you had number xxx or lower, you could get in the line. Why not just make this policy for everyone? Less time in line means people have more time to spend money elsewhere! Anyway, I'll try to keep my griping to a minimum.

There were a ton of cool guests but time (and money) prevented me from getting to meet them. But I can truthfully say I was in the same building as Ewan McGregor so that counts for something!

Countdown to Halloween 2022

It's still hotter than a witch's cauldron out there but the sign ups for the 2022 Countdown to Halloween are now open!

Head on over to the Countdown site to find the sign up link in the top right column.

The full moon shines down on a forgotten cemetery. The pale light creates an ethereal silver glow as it reflects over an ever present ground fog. The fog breaks slightly as a black cat bounds between the headstones and stops at the door to an ancient stone crypt. The door creaks open slowly with the weight of centuries. Stale air and a warm, flickering orange glow begin to spill out. "Ah, it's good to be alive," you think. "Again."

Who's ready to get spooky??

Monthly Media Recap - July 2022

I know July has 31 days but did it seem a bit on the long side for anyone else? Anyway, we're kicking it into August which is pretty much the start of spooky season! Just the other day I spotted Reese's Pumpkins at the supermarket and I know folks on social media have been spotting stuff at places like Home Goods and Michael's. Let's goooo!

Streaming Series

Of course I watched the first part when it was released but wanted to wait until it was all wrapped up before talking about it. Easily my favorite season so far! I can't believe how much the show is growing with the kids. They went from Monster Squad to full on Nightmare on Elm Street and I am loving it! I am going to be in agony waiting for the final season and I just know the Duffers are going to slay it!

Iman Vellani is Kamala Khan. She absolutely embodies the character and I couldn't be happier at her portrayal. I can't wait to see her meet Capt. Marvel and nerd out! It's unfortunate the new Marvel shows are only getting 6 episodes, she definitely could have used more breathing room. The power change worked great but time will tell how that big thing at the end turns out.

This is getting terrible reviews but I thought it was at least okay. My Resident Evil knowledge comes from the first three movies and that's it. I didn't suffer through it except towards the end of the final episode where it started feeling a little SyFy original. I guess the best thing I can say is that I'll tune in if it comes back.

You may have watched the recent CBS show (if not, you should be!) but did you know if was based on a UK show? The first three seasons are streaming and I think I'm actually enjoying it more than the US version. Being a UK show, the seasons are around 6 episodes. Even if you haven't seen the US version, give this a shot!

The Most Hated Man on the Internet (2022, Netflix)
Human. Garbage. I don't think I remember hearing about this 10 years ago (or I forgot). If you're such a scumbag that Anonymous comes after you, you probably deserve what you get.

Retro Gaming - Flipsiders by Milton Bradley

The title is a little misleading. Usually when you hear retro gaming, people are talking about video games but today I'm talking about a series of pocket sized board games from the 80s called Flipsiders released by good ol' Milton Bradley.

Image from Ebay

The reason I picked this particular thing to talk about is that I found one of my games recently while digging through some boxes of stuff. Flipsiders was a series of games that came in a cassette style housing. Everything you needed to play (except the instructions) was inside the cassette: a spinner, four tiny player movers cleverly stored in a small compartment, and a 3 panel game board.

The game I have is Dragon Master where two players race to be the first to fight their way through three dungeon levels and defeat the dragon.

11 Years and Counting

Here we are again, another 365 days since the last blog anniversary post!
This year, the blog goes to 11

No presents this year, just the usual stat recap.
Here are the Top 10 posts of all time:

Shocking even me, the Top 10 changed since last year. My very first Countdown to Halloween post from 2011 has cracked the Top 10. The League of Extraordinary Bloggers Space Post from 2013 remains on top and has hit double digits in views. That's double digits in thousands, not just 10 people.
If you're reading this, thanks for being a regular.
If you're not reading this, I'd be very interested in hearing about it.

Dan Brereton's Nocturnals October Epoch Calendar on Kickstarter

If you're like me, you'd be happy if it was Halloween 365. We're not quite there yet but illustrator Dan Brereton wants to help out with a new calendar that starts in October and ends next October.

I absolutely love the Nocturnals comic series/setting. It's Gothic horror, pulp noir, and Halloween all rolled into one. I am over the moon at the thought of keeping them up on my wall for a year to countdown to next Halloween. In addition to the gorgeous artwork, the calendar will have important horror dates like movie premieres and creator birthdays.

It's only $25 to get the calendar itself. If you watch the video, you'll see there's some amazing other goodies you can get at higher pledge levels.

Monthly Media Recap - June 2022

Hope everyone has a happy and safe 4th of July!
If you're looking for something to watch over the long weekend, check out the Tubi app. It's completely free with ads but has movies you won't find (don't want to find?) anywhere else and some fun classic shows like Buck Rogers, Battlestar Galactica, and The Greatest American Hero. I'm just starting on the Logan's Run show because although I know I watched it, I don't remember any of it.

I am in no way affiliated with Tubi but the titles below are Amazon affiliate links. Even if you don't want anything I'm talking about, use the link and buy yourself something nice. I'll still get credit for it.
The Flight Attendant (S2, HBO Max)
Kaley Cuoco is just fantastic in this, even better than last season. Her character evolution is something else! The writing on the show is great, not just the characters but how the story keeps you guessing. I feel like they've done something fresh with this show and I hope it comes back.

Kenobi (Disney+)
Star Wars fans can be very vocal about what they don't like but I prefer to focus on what I do like and I liked this series quite a bit! It gave me things I was expecting in ways I wasn't expecting and a lot of stuff I wasn't expecting at all but enjoyed. The young actress was perfectly cast and is just so darn adorable.

Funko Soda - Doctor Strange & Gomez Addams

Up until this weekend, I had only owned a single Funko Soda...figure? Piece? Not sure what you'd actually call these. It says collectible on the can but that doesn't sound fun. Anyway! I decided to pick up Strange this past weekend and just couldn't let him leave the store alone.

One of the reasons I don't have many Soda figures is that they're not as ubiquitous as the Pops. You can find Pops almost anywhere and I've only ever found the Soda in one store, Newbury Comics. This is a New England chain of stores that started out selling comics (surprise!) and music. Now they carry all sorts of pop culture stuff. Think Hot Topic without the goth.

Fundraiser for the Kids

I'm not selling cookies or candy bars for a school trip, I'm playing video games to help kids fight cancer!

In what will likely be one of the easiest challenges in my life, I'm pledging to play at least one hour of games per week to raise money for St Jude Childrens' Research Hospital. Now, it can be any type of game: video, board, card, heck even hopscotch would do but I'm sticking with video games.

I will not be live streaming. I don't have the gear for it. Also I don't think I'd be a very entertaining personality to watch play games.

The official "challenge" starts today and if you can spare anything, please head over to my fundraiser page on Facebook and help the kids. Remember in grade school when you did a walk- or read-a-thon an people pledged by how many miles/books you finished? Well, this is a flat donation which is good for you because if you had to pledge by the number of hours I log, you'd probably be broke at the end of it!

Like a telethon, I've got gifts if you pledge a certain amount. This is my way of saying thanks by giving you something extra, and not connected to the fundraiser.

For every $10, I'll send you a Steam code for your choice of a game.
You read that right, every $10 gets you one game! I have a list of codes so your choice will be limited to what I have available. Message me through Facebook or drop a comment below and we'll work it out.

For $25 you can add these merry mutants to your SuperHero Squad collection.

If you pledge $50 or more, I will put together an early Trick or Treat package for you.
I only have enough things to make one box so there's only one available.

Whether you do it for the freebies or not, I appreciate any donations.

Spooky Tarot on Kickstarter

Already at double it's funding goal with 22 days left, Ryan Caskey's Spooky Tarot looks to be a real treat for the Halloween fans!

If you've been around here, it's no surprise that this was an insta-back for me when it went live. The artwork on the cards is both gorgeous and terrifying at the same time.

The traditional Tarot suits have been swapped for Pumpkins, Cats, Spirits, and Worms!

Head on over to the Kickstarter to sell your soul for this wicked Tarot deck. Or, maybe just 35 bucks if you don't want to give up your precious soul.
Also follow Ryan on Instagram for more spooky goodness!

Monthly Media Recap - May 2022

I don't know about where you live, but around here, Memorial Day weekend is the start of neighborhood "we can shoot off fireworks when we feel like it" season for the next two months.
Being the unofficial start of summer movie season, are you planning on going to the theater or are you content to stream the summer at home? Let me know in the comments if you've seen anything good lately, I'm always up for recommendations!

Spider-Woman (1979, Disney+)
I thought it would be fun to go back and check this out since I haven't seen it in 40+ years. Not only can the himbo Jessica works with not figure out she's Spider-Woman (no matter where in the world they are, she shows up) but when he's not trying to get a dinner date with her, he's putting her down for being a woman (it's too dangerous, you're not strong enough, etc). It's supposed to be a joke between Jessica and the viewer but yikes! They're also very loosey-goosey with her powers. She has a spider sense that gives her visions, she can shoot webs, and sometimes has spider telepathy. If you have a fondness for 70s/80s cartoons, this should hit the spot for you.
I blew through this over a weekend. This animated anthology is definitely not for the kiddos. There's a nice variation in the settings of the shorts, some are very violent but all are a lot of fun! If you're a scifi/horror fan this series is definitely worth your time.

This is the perfect love child of classic Bakshi rotoscope animation and Heavy Metal. The story follows a plant that grants wicked magical power and it's impact over generations. Add to the fantasy setting nudity and brutal violence and you're in for a treat. You'd swear this came right out of the 80s at you!

Uno Ultimate - Doctor Strange & Scarlet Witch

If you're the type of person that regularly checks out the board game section when you're doing a toy run, you may have seen the latest incarnation of Uno, Uno Ultimate Marvel. Although I don't currently have the "base" game, I had to pick up these add-on packs for two of my favorite Marvel characters. I'd been hunting for these and finally bit the bullet on eBay only to find them in Target at 50% off a few days later!

You might be asking what makes Ultimate Marvel different from the endless re-themes of Uno we get. In this version, each player chooses a specific hero deck to play with. The base game includes Iron Man, Thor, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel. There's also one other add-on deck for Spider-Man. As you might expect, each deck has a different strategy to it.

Doctor Strange - Marvel Legends Walmart Exclusive

The Doctor is in, baby! Strange has had a handful of incarnations in the Marvel Legends line from the movies, comics, and even the What If? animated series. None of them have really hit that sweet spot of "I gotta have it!" despite Strange being my favorite Marvel character. Well, they finally made "My Strange".

Naturally, it's a hard to find (at least for me) Walmart exclusive. But by the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth, I have found him! He's costs a tiny bit more than a regular Legend but with all the extras, I feel like I underpaid if anything. (Note that I'm talking about pre-recent price hike prices of $20) I popped the side panel open on the box here to show off the artwork.

Monthly Media Recap - April 2022

Can you believe it? We're halfway to Halloween already!

The Witcher (S2, Netflix)
It felt like there were fewer monsters this season but the ones that were there were great. On the other hand, the story sucked me in and got me more involved with the characters. Can't wait for season 3!
Two Sentence Horror Stories (S2, Netflix)
I think there was a little improvement with the quality of episodes over last season. One story features a trans high school student that is being bullied. I'm not surprised the CW did this of any network but it was cool to see.

Book Report - You Are (Not) Deadpool

Thanks to NetGalley and the cool kids at Aconyte Books, I was lucky enough to get a review copy of one of the upcoming Marvel Multiverse Mission Adventures Gamebooks. Whew, say that five times fast! This copy was provided for free in exchange for my honest review.

While Marvel Gamebooks are new for Aconyte, they've put out 20 Marvel fiction novels to date with more on the way. I haven't read any of them yet but there are a pair of Doctor Doom books I've got my eye on.

You may ask yourself, what is a Multiverse Mission Adventure Gamebook? First, I'd say you've got a very wordy brain. Second, it's like a Choose Your Own Adventure but with dice and note taking.

Star Wars Action Figure Playing Cards

There was a time, years ago, when I could say I owned every deck of Star Wars playing cards that was put out. Now, they're just cranking them out. I think they're going too niche in the quest for more money. At any rate, my point is that I can't catch em all anymore but will pick one up that strikes me.

And how could anyone that grew up with the original movies, and toys, pass this up? For a lot of fans my age, the Kenner line is just as much a part of our love for Star Wars as the movies themselves. Before you could stream anything, even before VHS was in every house, the toys let you have your own adventures whether you wanted to recreate the movies or make up your own stories.

Monthly Media Recap - March 2022

If you like what you see, be sure to hit that subscribe button, smash Like and leave a comment. I didn't really have anything for this opening, just wondering if anyone actually reads it!

Disenchantment (S4, Netflix)
I've done nothing but rave about this series since it started and will continue to do so until the quality drops or it ends. I'm guessing it will end first. Even if you're not into fantasy but enjoy humor and good characters, give it a try.

Two Sentence Horror Stories (S1, Netflix or CW app)
Before it was a show, I'm pretty sure this started off as some kind of social media thing where people would come up with very short creepy stories. I wasn't expecting much from a horror anthology on the CW but it's actually pretty decent. The episodes are short so it's good when you want a quick horror fix. Each episode is bookended by the first and second sentence which kind of lets you try to guess what will happen.

So glad I decided to watch this! It's a fantastic spoof of gothic horror, in particular the Corman/Price/Poe movies. There's even a guy doing his best Vincent Price. We all know Elvira is funny but her comedic timing in this is perfection.

Vampire Survivors - Game Review

I play video games a lot but I wouldn't call myself a "hardcore" gamer. In a year, I may play between two and four AAA titles but the rest of the time I'm playing smaller indie games, usually on Steam. I found out about Vampire Survivors from Splattercat's YouTube channel and have been hooked on it!

It's only $3 and the developer is updating it just about every two weeks with tweaks and new content. The game itself is pretty simple but there are plenty of things to unlock that will keep you saying "just one more."

Fortnite Micro Series - Dark Voyager

I swear I've seen more Jazwares Fortnite toys come out since they announced Hasbro got the license. I saw the Micro Series popup a short while ago but every time I find them it seems to always be the same four or five figures of the 11 on the card back. But I finally found the one I've been looking for!

The Micro Series figures are about 2.5" tall and come with one accessory. While they're all decent figures, this one in particular grabbed my attention because he's a space looking dude.

Although I've been playing the game for over a year, I'm not into the lore so I don't know anything about the Dark Voyager other than he looks like he might have auditioned for a part in Dead Space.

Strange Days Ahead

After seeing No Way Home, and being a little disappointed with how Strange was portrayed, I thought I'd dive back into Strange's comic history in the lead up to Multiverse of Madness. Now this isn't new territory for me, not by a long shot. How I discovered Strange is lost to the mists of time but there is one thing that stands out in my childhood memories, okay maybe two things.

I had these two Pocket Books, so called because they were paperback size and could fit in your back pocket, that I must have read a billion times each. Like most young boys at some point, I was into the whole knights and wizards thing but my interests seemed to skew more toward the magically inclined. I was such a Strange nerd that I had a three ring binder that I would copy his spell incantations into. Just know, in a pinch, I can still recall how to conjure the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak.

Monthly Media Recap - February 2022

I slacked a little getting this post ready so no witty chat at the top.
Here's what I consumed in February.

The Book of Boba Fett (2022, Disney+)
I'm still a little mixed on this. It had some great moments (mainly flashbacks and finale), a really bad moment (that cartoon chase), and a lot of pretty okay moments. My main "issue" with it is I just didn't feel Fett was very competent in the 'modern' timeline.
All of Us are Dead (2022, Netflix)
This is where a lot of my movie time went this month. I really liked it from the start, ain't no zombies like Korean rage zombies! It had a lot of good character interaction, which they might have been able to trim an episode worth to tighten it up just a tiny bit. Still a good time and something fresh if you're Walking Dead out-ed. Might be the most competent military zombie response I've seen.

Grid Assassin - Battletribes Glyos Figure

This started out as a DCon Exclusive figure but some were made available later to the public. It actually dropped the same weekend as the Armored Orphan figure but there was no way I was passing on one over the other! Plus, this will fit in nicely with my other Tron inspired figures.

Like any good assassin, he's got lots of gear to get the job done.
He comes with:
3 heads - 2 torsos
belted front skirt thingy
2 pairs of hands - 2 pairs of boots
2 swords - sword "sheath"
staff  - sai - nunchucks

The only thing his missing is an identity disc.

This is what I call the Grid head, very scifi/Daft Punk looking, with the pair of swords. The front skirt thingy (I'm sure there's an actual name for it!) has a loop in the back to hold a weapon. It, along with the weapons and hands is slightly translucent which kinda adds to the whole sneaky assassin vibe.

The back on this torso has a cool disc-like image.

Here's the Ninja head with the alternate torso, hands, and boots.

Lastly, the "Bruce Lee" head with staff. I know it doesn't look much like him here but with that haircut, he's the first thing to come to mind. You can see the sword "sheath" on his back. It's just a little peg with two slots. Simple but effective.

Monthly Media Recap - January 2022

I somehow managed to movie myself out early in the month. About halfway through, I just didn't feel like watching movies! That was kind of an odd feeling for me because I'm almost always down for something.

Anyway, here's what I did watch last month. If you saw something worth mentioning, let me know in the comments.

Cobra Kai (S4, Netflix)
The dude soap opera continues with more fighting and more drama! How many more Under 18 Tournaments do these kids have left in them? Not extremely familiar with the movies so the end of this season was a mystery but I'll figure it out.

80s Top Ten (Disney+)
Each episode of the series covers a specific Top 10 topic like Ads, Fashion, Toys, etc. If you weren't around in the 80s, I don't know if you'd even find this interesting. So much of this is being in the culture at the time. I suppose it'd be good for younger folks to laugh at their parents.

Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer (2021, Netflix)
This is split about 40/60 between the titular killer and how sleazy Time Square was back in the 70s. Oddly, the murder part wasn't as interesting to me as the history of Times Square.
