Well, here we are at another Halloween! If you're looking for something
to watch tonight, maybe something below will grab your interest.
Streaming Series
Over the past few months, binged all five seasons. Kinda sad this year is the final season. The show is so damn funny with top notch performances and certain things that will no doubt linger in the pop culture consciousness for years to come.
Movies
I don't know if I would have watched this if not for the buzz I'd been seeing
around it, but I'm glad I did! It's an...odd amalgamation of thriller, murder
mystery, and horror that works very well. It actually feels like something
that Hammer could have put out in the 70s. It's the kind of creepy that might
have you turning on lights in the house when you're alone.

Not only did I get to introduce Mrs Dex to one of my all time favorite movies
but we got to see it in a theater with a live band performing the music! It's
quite an experience seeing this with an audience and the live music. There
were a handful of people in costume but hearing the audience reactions was a
real treat. The tour is going for quite awhile so
check ticket availability!
Rating: I can't objectively give a rating to this, it's part of my DNA
This isn't the Bed and Bath type of Beyond, it's the extraterrestrial kind.
The stories in this anthology involve aliens or science fiction in some shape.
What I love about this series is that you never really know what you're in for
with each story. Even if it's something that's been done before, like aliens,
it's done in a fresh way.
Rating: 7/10
I picked this based on the title alone. I'd put it on par with some of the
worst SyFy Original movies and yet with 52 reviews on IMDB it's sitting at an
8/1.10? The CGI is laughably bad but I have to give credit to he practical
"witches" that are really Predator-like aliens that shoot webs out of their
hands. I have to think they purposely made a bad movie but that doesn't make
me enjoy it more.
Rating: 3/10
Being someone that can't stand "reality" TV I thought a slasher based around
that premise sounded like it could be fun. The first 2/3 leaned more into the
behind the scenes of the show and girls being catty to each other than I was
expecting which wasn't holding my interest. The kills are meh and the killer
is wearing some kind of disco ball mask.
Rating: 4/10
After hearing about the Hex Girls for years, I figured it was time to see what
the hype was about. They were okay here. I was thinking they were more spell
casting witches than rock group and the tunes are fun. At the end of it, this
is just an extra-long Scooby episode and it does everything you'd expect.
There was no "corridor of doors" sequence though.

Monster Island (2004, Tubi)
Remember when MTV made movies? I was instantly sold after watching the
trailer. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (unknown at this point), Carmen Electra
(remember her?), Adam West and giant, stop motion bugs? I'm all in, baby! The
trailer tells you they know how dumb the movie is and that's what makes it a
lot more fun than Killer Witches. Spoiler alert (if you care): Nick Carter is
in this for maybe five minutes.
Rating: 6/10, it's not a great movie but it is a good time!
I "accidentally" saw this in a theater. You might wonder how you accidentally
see a movie in a theater but that's a topic for a post coming up in the next
couple weeks. Roger Corman + Vincent Price + Edgar Allan Poe is always a good
time. It's definitely campy, even silly at times, but Price is a joy to watch
as always.
Rating: 6/10
Watched the following week in theater...in PERCEPTO! Again, this will all be
in a future post. William Castle was as genius showman that incorporated
gimmicks into the theater. Even though I'd never been able to experience any
of his movies with the tricks (until now) they'd always been entertaining in a
way that only old horror movies can be to someone with my tastes.
Rating: 6/10
While I can appreciate the stylistic choices and what they were doing, it just
wasn't what I was expecting after the last two movies. I think I was a little
let down there wasn't more horror to it. Mia Goth is fantastic as always. If I
come back to this at some point, I'll probably like it a little more knowing
what to expect.
Rating: 5/10
Carved (2024, Hulu)
Definitely the best killer pumpkin movie I've seen! It really is a lot of fun,
not to be viewed too seriously and the characters aren't just there for body
count. If you could remove the gore, it would be a solid Goosebumps movie.
