Gather 'round, ghouls! It's the October Monthly Media Recap coming at ya
a little early in case you're in search of something spooky to watch after
Trick or Treating. Clicking a link will take you to the trailer on YouTube.
Happy Halloween!
A collection of 10 horror shorts that are around 10 minutes each. Perfect size
to slot one in between movies. Most of them are at least decent and there are
a couple that stand out, so I'd say definitely give them a go,
Gatchaman Progress
Only 2 this month so I could cram in maximum spooky. Up to 95...getting
closer!
Movies
Buzzkill (2026, Tubi)
A sorority girl witnesses a murder but the only way she can recall the
details is to get drunk! I thought the premise would wear thin quick but the
lead actress is so entertaining to watch being a wreck of a person. It's got
a couple of fun kills and humor vibes along the lines of Happy Death Day.

At one point, I was planning on going through the entire series. I think I
only made it to 3 or 4. Anyway, this reboot has got everything I want in a
Hellraiser flick: Cenobites, chains, gnarly kills, and despicable people. I
even really like how they reinterpreted how the box works.

An annual Halloween release, I always look forward to. This one felt a little
off because of the inclusion of GWAR hosting the wraparound and showing the
videos. I don't know a lot about them except they exist, on paper they should
be something I like but they almost made me turn this off within the first 10
minutes. Most of the segments themselves aren't bad and there's even a couple
I really liked but I'm hoping the next one is a lot better.

I linked the trailer but I can't stress enough to NOT watch it if you may want
to see the movie. Now, if you're a horror fan, you can probably guess
something based on the name but I can guarantee it's not going the way you
think. This is a fantastic horror/thriller, Debra Ann Woll is great, and it's
got practical effects that are Hall of Horror worthy. Go in as blind as you
can, it's a wild ride!

Hokum (2026, Hulu)
I've seen a lot of people say this was boring, yes it probably could have been
a little shorter, but I really enjoyed it for the folklore aspects and creepy
atmosphere. It feels a little more "classic" horror, where it's the kind of
thing that make you put the lights on after watching. Only knowing Adam Scott
for comedy, it was different to see him playing a real dick of a
character.
Rating: 7/10
Hallowarrior (2026, Shudder)
Starts out bringing strong Halloween vibes as we meet Pumpkin, a 16 year old
survivor of some sort of apocalypse that's wiped out crops and her family.
When some unexpected Trick or Treaters show up, it shifts gears into a home
invasion with some decent effects. It's quick at just 80 minutes and I have to
give it points for tossing Halloween, post apocalypse, and home invasion into
a blender to see what happens.

undertone (2026, HBO Max)
This was quite an experience. It all takes place in one house and is
essentially a one woman show, her only interaction with other people being over
the phone. Absolutely amazing audio design and that's where the horror comes
in. There's also some truly dread inducing camera work that keeps you on the
edge of your seat.
Rating: 7/10
The House With a Clock in Its Walls (2018, Netflix)
Ending on a lighter note, I LOVED this! It's got that childhood sense of wonder and magic to it that makes me want to live in that universe. Black and Blanchett are fabulous (no offense to Charlize Theron, but Blanchett would be great as Clea in the MCU...if she wasn't already in it). It's a great family Halloween watch and is probably now my favorite "orphan moves in with his uncle and learns magic" movie.
