Back in 2021 (thanks, Covid), I made my first visit to Disney's Galaxy's
Edge. I had initially planned on making my own lightsaber but as the vacation
drew closer I decided I really wanted to build my own droid instead. I know
the lightsaber thing is a whole experience but practically, at home, there's
not really a place to display a lightsaber.
It was a little overwhelming at first, trying to decide which parts I wanted
and what colors to choose. I was really drawn to the semi-transparent dome and only liked it in one color, orange. An idea began to form and I built
R3-IO31, or Io (Eye-Oh) for short.
Unfortunately, I couldn't realize my vision on the build day as they were out of stock on the orange panel accessories. I was able to get them shortly after via Ebay, completing my Halloween droid...until this year when they released a set of Halloween panels! It's not uncommon for people that frequent the parks to flip park exclusive merch so I got lucky on Ebay again not paying much over retail.
And here's IO with the spooOOOoky panels. The webbing on the panels glows in the dark and the set comes with a special Halloween personality chip. When you build the droid, you can choose a personality chip which gives it different sounds. You can hear the Halloween sounds in this clip.
I've been perusing Etsy listings for 3D printed witch hats but haven't found
any I like yet. If you're going to get a ghostly glow up, you might as well go
all in!
