Monthly Media Recap - August 2024

Happy October Eve month! As usual, the blog will be going into hibernation for most of September to prep for the 31 day Countdown to Halloween celebration. Also as usual, links below are Amazon Affiliate links where I may earn from qualifying purchases.

On with the show!

Series

Cobra Kai (S6 Part 1, Netflix)
Karate Fight Soap Opera is back! It's still fun but after last season I just can't take the "serious" parts seriously. Sometimes it feels like a spoof of a Mexican soap opera with the drama and the who's teaming up with who.

Unsolved Mysteries (S4, Netflix)
I don't know that I needed an episode about Jack the Ripper, it's been unsolved for a little while now but the Mothman ep was kinda fun. Fun in the "turn all the lights on your way to bed" way. The true crime eps are where it's at and they've definitely got some interesting cases.

Files of the Unexplained (Netflix)
Hey, you got your Unsolved Mysteries in my In Search Of! It's like the Time Life Mysteries of the Unknown books in half hour format. If you were the kind of kid that always checked out books about Bigfoot, UFOs, etc, it's worth checking out. The last episode about a beach that's had way more than it's fair share of human severed feet wash up is a must watching because WTF?

Movies

I don't know marketing but if I were in charge for this movie, I would have found a way to not reveal the vampire angle in the trailers. Talk about giving too much away! Knowing that twist going in, this becomes an average "haunted house" type movie with a couple of good scenes.

Rating: 5/10

I'm somewhat familiar with the Tarot and I'm pretty sure it doesn't work the way it does in this movie. I can give them a pass on it because of the great monster designs that come out of it. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie is a little predictable as each character meets their "foretold" death. It feels like Final Destination by way of Blumhouse which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Rating: 6/10

A rare rewatch because Mrs Dex wanted to see it and I will never turn down a chance for her to dip her toe a little more into the horror pond. I think I even liked it more on the second viewing. It's just such a fun flick!

Rating: 7/10

There's something weird going on in this small coastal town and I'm not going to spoil what it is. I will say, this dragged in places and would be a banger of a Twilight Zone episode if it was cut down.

Rating: 5/10

While there is some action (a great opening Bat family fight), this installment focuses a lot on the personal stories of Kara and Psycho Pirate. They did a good job with the story telling because I was invested despite not really being familiar with the material.

Rating: 7/10

Hot take? Predators are bullies. They "hunt" physically weaker, technologically inferior prey and cloak themselves. It's like going deer hunting in a field with a laser sighted sniper rifle. That said, this is hands down my favorite since the original Predator. My only regret is finding out after watching it that there is a Comanche dub. The actors were all very good but hearing them speak English just didn't click. I may have to rewatch with the dub for the experience. It's a damn shame this didn't get a theatrical release.

If G: Minus One is the kaiju Citizen Kane, this is a Fast & Furious sequel. I mean, that's what Universal is doing with these right? This is the fifth one. Let's jump the dino-shark and have a crossover! It's a "dumb fun" popcorn movie with plenty of spectacle and inexplicable drops of 80s songs. I have no idea how this world can continue to exist after major cities become collateral damage during Monster Smackdowns.

A decent follow up to Prometheus, if you were into that. There were a couple too many versions of the xenomorph. Maybe I missed if they were explained or how it seemed to evolve in minutes but if you want something that blends up familiar Alien stuff with a splash of new, here you go. I was a little shocked at how hard they went with the blood in this one.

Rating: 6/10

In the 80s/90s, I was a Full Moon Features junkie who scoured Blockbuster for the latest release. They may have been low budget but their stuff was always fun. Nothing they've done in recent memory has clicked with me. They've been hyping this one up as the first in a new series of "pulp noir" releases. More like pulp nah. It's got a solid premise straight from the 80s but the bad acting and use of AI to create monsters and environments really sinks it to new depths. I guess I should have watched the Joe Bob Briggs version.
