Monthly Movie Recap - August 2019

With Labor Day around the corner, who is ready for HALLOWEEN? I'll tell you who, Dinosaur Dracula who kicked off his annual Halloween Countdown Friday.

Things may be a little quieter than normal around here for the next month as I gear up for the blogger Countdown to Halloween. 31 days of posts don't just happen over night...unfortunately.

Streaming

The Boys (Amazon Prime) - This is exactly what we need right now to shake up the superhero world. If you have Prime and haven't watched this yet, check out a trailer! Be warned, this is most definitely R rated for all the reasons. I started reading the comic it's based on and the books are even further out there than the show!

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (S2, Netflix) - Still absolutely loving this show! This ain't your TGIF Sabrina. If you haven't seen it yet, it'd be great for an October binge-fest.

Life After Flash (2017, Amazon Prime)
You're either a fan of 1980's Flash Gordon or you're not. If you are, you should absolutely check out this doc. It mainly focuses on Sam Jones' post-Flash life but it's also got some great behind the scenes stuff and interviews with other cast members, fans, and a few random celebs.

Insidious: The Last Key (2018)
I haven't seen the third Insidious movie but that didn't keep me from enjoying this one. I really like the design of the demon (I refuse to call it Keyface despite it being listed as such in the credits) but it's a shame we don't get any back story on it. I don't think it does too muchin the way of new but what it does, it does well.

(full movie free!)

Only knew of the existence of this due to finding a book from the series in a thrift store. If you're not expecting a lot in the way of plot or character development with a title like this, you're absolutely correct. It's more of an excuse to see topless women for most of the 75 minute run time. I guess it falls into the Nudie Cutie category. There's a handful of jokes that are a little chuckle but not enough to get high marks.

Unfriended: Dark Web (2018)
I'll be the first to admit I have an odd fascination with horror movies that use social media/computer life as a basis. I liked the first Unfriended so I thought I'd give this one a shot. It started out pretty good and I have to give them props for telling the entire story through PCs/webcams. Plus I really liked the "dark web" aspect of things. As it went on it just got a little too much and didn't quite stick the ending. Pretty sure I gave it a hard eye roll.

The Curse of La Llarona (2019, Redbox)
I really feel like they missed an opportunity with this one. Instead of another ghost story, we could have had something a bit more rooted in the culture of the legend of La Llarona. There's nothing scary or creepy here, it relies on cheap jump scares for any kind of reaction. Still puzzled how it got an R rating and why the shoehorned it in the Conjuring universe. The most fun you might have is singing La Llarona to the tune of My Sharona for a few days.

Rating: 5/10

As a grindhouse horror throwback this fits the bill. As an enjoyable movie...not so much. There's a large cast of characters to start, who you know are only there for a body count. You never really get to know any of them so who cares if they die? It's sort of like The Running Man meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre without a main character to root for. Shock and surprise, Sheri Moon Zombie is the one who makes it out alive, the person I have the least interest for in any Rob Zombie movie.
