Monthly Media Recap - August 2025

Two months until Halloween! That means the blog will be going into hibernation mode for the next month so I can prepare a post for every day in October.

Linked titles will take you to a trailer and let's get on with the show...

Shows

I LOVE this show! It's been filling the hole in my heart left by SyFy's 2017 Blood Drive. I know this is already based on a video game, but can we get a new video game based on the show?

Movies

I guess you could call me a casual, enthusiastic fan of FF comics. I keep up with them because I like the character dynamics and the sci-fi elements. This movie delivered for me on both fronts and definitely had a human aspect to it that made it more than just another superhero movie. I love the art direction and that we're just dropped into it with enough backstory to skip the usual "origin story" tropes. My biggest complaint is that Ben got the short straw in the character development department.

Clown in a Cornfield (2025, Shudder & VOD)
Yes, it's a silly title but the movie itself has a little humor to it. This has actually been a book since 2020. I frequently see Amazon recommend it to me and just never got around to it. The movie doesn't do anything really new for the slasher genre but it doesn't have to because it's a near perfect specimen with some fun (sometimes funny) kills.

I caught this at the local Cinema Salem presented by The Spooky Picture Show podcast. One of the guys on the show spent most of his COVID lockdown color correcting the movie, adding in some additional thunder and lightning effects, and using the audio from the Japanese laserdisc version to make his own version of the movie. I love this movie but haven't seen it nearly enough times to pick up on the changes but getting to see it with an audience was such a blast!

Death of a Unicorn (2025, HBO Max)
Maybe because it's A24 but I was expecting a little more than what I got. Don't get me wrong, the cast is great and a rampaging unicorn horror/comedy isn't something we get every day but I feel like there's a certain something missing that could make this really fantastic instead of just above average. Still, it does have some heart to it which I wasn't expecting and it's fun to see the bad guys get what they deserve.

During a visit with my parents, my stepdad mentioned the train chase in this movie so we decided to watch it. I'm pretty sure I saw this when it came out but didn't remember much about it. This may be a parody film with Leslie Nielsen, but the Naked Gun it is not. While most of the jokes are funny, the story barely exists except as a way to get from joke to joke.

Naturally, we followed up with the cream of the crop to wash away the bad taste. I've seen this I don't know how many times and it's still just as funny every time. If I find it while channel surfing, you know it's going on. We followed this up with this YouTube video comparing it to the movie Zero Hour which Airplane! is basically a remake of...but funnier.

Rating: For me, this is beyond being able to be assign a mortal rating

Until Dawn (2025, Netflix)
It wasn't until after I watched this that I found out it was inspired by a video game that I'm not familiar with...which totally explains why I felt like I was missing something. I absolutely love the first half, it's got a very Cabin in the Woods vibe with the various killers. The kills/gore are a treat (sometimes surprising in their sudden brutality) and there's the mystery of the time loop. Unfortunately, that mystery never gets explained despite the cumbersome exposition dump that starts the second half of the movie.

Freaky Tales (2024, HBO Max/Hulu)
I only saw this popup while looking for something to watch, deciding to give it a go on the thumbnail and a two sentence summary. I strongly encourage you to do the same and not watch the trailer so you can enjoy the full ride that is this movie. It's like Pulp Fiction was an 80s indie comic made live action. I won't say anything about the interconnected plots but the actors are a joy to watch. This has all the makings of a cult classic. You're either onboard with the vibe, or you're not.
