Last weekend, Mrs Dex and I went to our first Creation Entertainment
convention, which was also our first Supernatural convention.
Creation has been around since 1971 and they specialize in fandom specific conventions. I've been to I don't know how many local comic conventions and a handful of Star Wars Celebrations but this was definitely the most intimate con I've attended. And I have to say, it was probably the best run con I've been to with regards to making sure people got their autographs and photo ops. Of course there were lines, but they did a great job calling up people by rows to get in the lines and keep them relatively short.
Supernatural fans are called family. Now, before you start getting in your
Fast & Furious jokes, let me tell you I now know why that is. Everyone we
interacted with from fans, to vendors, to the celebrities were all incredibly
nice. They were also welcoming and excited for us when we mentioned it was our
first Supernatural con.
Even though Boston is about 20 minutes away, we made this our "big vacation"
for the year; splurging on a hotel room, upgraded tickets packages, and a few
photo ops. It was definitely nice to only be a few floors up and not have to
travel into the city every day.
Being a smaller con, the majority of the events took place in the hotel
ballroom. This was nice because there wasn't much in the way of counter programming where
you had to choose one event over another.
Most of the events were panels of one or more actors talking to the fans and
doing Q&As. Our tickets included assigned seating which was great because
we were close to the stage and it also meant we were sitting next to the same
people all weekend so we got to know a few folks.
If you're not part of the Supernatural family, you may not recognize some of
the celebrity guests but I'd bet money you've probably seen DJ Qualls here in
something at some point. He was in a couple panels and also hosted a karaoke
party Friday night. Fans put their names in for a chance to go on stage to
sing with him and a few other celebrities. Of course, the night ended with
"Carry on My Wayward Son" by Kansas with the whole crowd singing along. A couple even got engaged during the party!
Misha Collins had some entertaining stories about working on the show.
He's also incredibly funny! We went to a separate event where it was just him
talking about his life growing up here in Massachusetts and being a parent.
Of course, the big draw was the main stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. We had met Jared a couple years ago at another con where he was promoting Walker.
We got to take some pics with Baby, the '67 Impala that's just as essential to the show as the actors. This particular one belongs to Jared and was used in the filming of the show. Jared and Jensen each got one after the show ended! Unfortunately, you were not allowed to get in the car for photos but you could stick your head in for a look.
Our photo with Misha in his Castiel costume, which was by far the most popular cosplay all weekend. Unless we're counting anyway wearing a flannel shirt as being dressed up as the Winchesters. There was more flannel here than a 90s Pearl Jam show.
The book I'm holding is a blank journal
that I picked up at the con for autographs. Some of the celebs did not have
photos when signing so you had to have something for them to sign. Of course, a con
booth was selling a variety of 8x10 for $8 each. The journal was less than
half what I would have spent on 8x10s after getting 8 autographs. I do kind of miss not having the traditional signed photo but I'm going to come up with some way to add the character/actor to their page so you can tell who's who.
I came up with this pose while we were in line. We wanted to do something
other than just stand there next to them. If you ever Google up Supernatural con photos, you'll see these guys are game for just about anything. I had maybe 5-10 seconds with them and they were both so nice and said how much they appreciate us for
being fans. I'm sure they say it to everyone but they're paying attention to you while you're there and it's not hard to believe they honestly mean it.
If you're part of the family, you might enjoy the rest of my pics.
If you want larger versions, you can check them out on Flickr.
So happy you treated yourselves to a fun weekend Great pics
