Monthly Media Recap - January 2025

Whew, what a year that was! What?
What do you mean it's only February?
I swear New Years was like...a year ago.

Series

A Man on the Inside (Netflix)
If you pitched me a show about an elderly man getting hired by a PI to go undercover in a retirement community I would probably say it's not for me. Boy, was I wrong! Ted Danson just seems to get better with age and really, the entire cast here is great. It has its comedic moments and a lot of emotional beats too.

Cobra Kai (Netflix, Season 6.5 or whatever they're calling the latest episodes)
I've never watched a minute of a real telenovela but I bet this show could give them a run for their drama money. It was all worth it for the over the top, over extended brawl in the final episode. Thank goodness these kids have karate in their life to help keep them focused.

Movies

This is the holiday horror comedy I was looking for last month! It's sort of like Gremlins but with murderous elves and more blood. I've been a fan of Martin Starr and it was good to see him in a starring role for a change.

Rating: 8/10

Do you like KISS's "I Was Made for Lovin You"? Then have I got your movie! I never watched the TV series but the movie was a good time. Plenty of action/stunts and even a couple of audio Easter eggs. The plot feels like it's trying a little too hard on twists but I guess you have to do something to string the set pieces together. I wonder if it was weird for the cast and crew to be working on a movie about working on a movie.

Rating: 7/10

I don't remember how I found this but I really hope it's the worst movie I see this year. The good news is that it's hilariously bad. For about an hour it's this poor woman being chased, harassed, and chased. Then she magically levels up to Rambo and becomes an Olympic level marksman with thrown weapons. I think the trailer will tell you if this is something you'd "enjoy."

I went in looking for a big budget, effects laden disaster movie and was not disappointed. Story? Yeah whatever, that's not what I'm here for. In some scenes these random people appear and you just know they're going to get twistered away in few minutes like extras in a slasher movie.

Rating: 6/10

Get Away (2024, Shudder)
Nick Frost and horror, you say? I'm in! I love these kind of folk horror movies because there's a certain level of weirdness that comes with them. Unlike most, this one is more comedy than straight out horror and Frost has a very Clark Griswold vibe which just amps the comedy when things take a turn.

Rating: 7/10

Until COVID, I had seen every Marvel movie in the theater and just now got around to watching this. Nothing against Natasha but because this came out after she died, I wasn't expecting much. What I got was solid spy movie action with some heart in it. Unfortunately for Natasha, her co-stars steal the scenes they're in and I feel like she's riding in the back seat a lot of the time.

Rating: 7/10

Naomi Scott's performance in this is phenomenal! She really deserves an award for this. I actually felt bad for the things her character was going through. They do some great camera work and there's one scene that has some amazing choreography. Not something I expected to say about a horror movie! I still don't quite get the whole smile thing but when the creature appears, it's a thing of nightmares. Now I know why this was on a lot of Best of 2024 lists.

Rating: 8/10

Who watches The Watchers? Me. I did. The movie looks great and I really enjoyed the dark fantasy and creepy atmosphere elements of it. If you're going to do a "mystery box," the opening of the box has to give that Jack-in-the-box reaction instead of that face you make when a family member gets you a strange gift that you're secretly going to return. In other words, the ending was a little disappointing for me.
