1-Up Dice Sets by Infinite Black

I got into D&D at an early age, which naturally lead me to explore other RPGs over the years. Anyone that's ever participated in tabletop role playing will tell you there's one thing you absolutely need: your own set of dice. Sure, there's books upon books for every game but you can always borrow those from a friend, but dice...dice are sacred to some and aren't to be shared.

 

I can't tell you the last time I picked up a die to make a saving throw or an attack roll so a new set of dice is something not even on my radar but when I saw this Kickstarter awhile back I had to get in on it. Not only did it combine RPGs and video games but the packaging really grabbed me.

As you can see, I liked the sets so much, I got two! It was just too hard to pick only one. And I got a few bonus items: silver and gold d20s and a special d2 coin.

Let's dig into the sets!

 

Each set comes with 11 8-bit themed dice, a retro game cartridge style holding case, and a dice bag. Each die has a set specific symbol in place of the die's highest number. The cartridge is held together by magnets and can be opened into two separate halves. The sets I got have a black and gray cartridges but there are also other sets that have a gold cartridge for the OG Zelda fans out there.

 

First is the Poison Dagger set. While I haven't done a lot (any) tabletop RPGing in a long time, I do play a lot of video RPGs and I tend towards the sneakier, rogue play styles when I do. The symbol for this set is (surprise!) a poison dagger. The iridescence of the dice look even better in person!

 

The dice bag is unique to each set with a matching color and symbol. You can see the small magnets at the top and bottom of each half of the cartridge box that hold it together. As far as dice trays go, these aren't very big but they do give enough room for the die to roll.

The second set I got is Monsters of Madness: Cackling Skull's Curse. The dice are actually purplish and I probably should have tried to light them from a different angle to show off their sparkle. I was too busy putting an Easter Egg in the shot. Can you find it?

 

This set was unlocked as a stretch goal during the Kickstarter. As I'm into monsters and spooky stuff, this was my second set of choice just based on the interior art here. I really like the cartridge for the Zombie Chopper set but wasn't as into the axe dice.

Each set also comes with a copy of Infinite Black's rules-lite Advanced 8-Bit RPG Rule Book (which you can get for free on their site) and one of five mini-adventures. Like old school D&D adventures, each one can be played by itself but is also made to be part of a connected story if you play them in order.
