Monthly Media Recap - May 2025

Seen anything good and/or unusual lately? Let me know in the comments, I'm always on the lookout for things to watch.

Linked titles will take you to a trailer

Series

Cobra Kai (S6, Netflix)
It probably could have been a season shorter to cut down on some of the soap opera theatrics. I'm not even a big Karate Kid fan but I think they did a good job of making Lawrence into someone you end up rooting for.

Deli Boys (Hulu)
I only found out about this show because the stars were on After Midnight, but I'm so glad I did! It's funny, the actors are great, and it's got some twists and turns as two bumbling brothers try to run their recently deceased father's drug operations.

Andor (S2, Disney+)
Not only do the themes this season hit hard in the current political climate, but it's an all around example of great TV. I don't think I've seen any episode of television like ep 8 where I was not only on the edge of my seat but a little sick to my stomach with dread seeing all the pins being setup and waiting for them to fall. If it doesn't win an award for costuming, I think there's going to be another kind of rebellion.

Movies

*Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016, Disney+)
If you don't watch this after finishing Andor, what are you even doing? This was my first time watching it from the start since it released and boy is the first act a little choppy with how it jumps around to set things up. Once it gets going though, it more than makes up for the rough start. If anything, I love it more now with the context of Andor.

Frankie Freako (2024, Shudder)
Another delightfully deranged detour from the director of Psycho Goreman. It's a little bit Gremlins, Puppet Master, and Garbage Pail Kids rolled into one. Disclaimer: I've never seen GPK but this is what I'd want it to be like. If the trailer doesn't make you say "I'm all in!" it's probably not for you. Shabba-doo!

If you think being in a supermarket while it's being robbed by armed men is bad, imagine a tsunami flooding the store and washing in some hungry sharks! The movie is actually not bad. And by not bad, I mean like a "good" SyFy Original not bad.

This feels like a Troma movie, only without their signature gross outs and gore. The title pretty much tells you everything you need to know. The effects aren't bad, the cast watchable, and the plot is...hey look! Killer donuts!

The Jester (2023, Shudder)
Very much feels like a Terrifier knock-off without the over the top gore. I completely missed the plot and thought the two sisters were mother and daughter, which only added to my confusion about what is going on. While we're at it...what IS going on? There's no real explanation for the Jester existing or why he's chosen his victims. I do like his design and the cartoon magic trick style in the ways he offs people. The character started out in this short film where you don't need to worry about plot.

When you start a series as strong as Fear Street did, you set the bar high for anything after it. I think they wanted this to be a slasher version of Mean Girls but the script is nowhere near that smart. It's fun at times and like previous installments, they don't shy away from the kills. Although towards the end, the killer's axe becomes lightsaber-like with the way it's dismembering people. The out of nowhere showdown a the prom between the main good girl and queen bitch absolutely brought the movie to a screeching halt for me. Also, what high school has senior prom in their gym?

The Ugly Stepsister (2025, Shudder)
This is like the opposite of all those "high school nerd girl becomes prom queen" movies. As you know, I watch a lot of horror. A maniac cutting up camp councilors? No problem. This movie had a couple scenes that had me watching while my head was partially turned away. It's got subtitles but don't let that deter you from watching this beautiful interpretation of Cinderella.
