Streaming
After eight seasons and three movies, I have completed my Psych journey...at
least until the next movie comes out. I stopped posting about finishing each
season because there wasn't more for me to say. The show blazed its way into
my top TV shows of all time thanks to the writing and characters. I love
it!
American Nightmare (Netflix)
This true crime doc about a young woman's kidnapping did not go where I
thought it would. The most horrifying thing about the story isn't the
abduction but how the victims were treated by law enforcement. I don't think
I've ever felt enraged after watching a documentary before.
Twisted Metal (S1, Peacock)
My sum knowledge of the game series is some kind of demolition derby with
tricked out vehicles. Oh, and there's an ice cream truck. The series
definitely delivered and was a ton of fun. It brought me back to SyFy's (or
were they still SciFi then?) series Blood Drive which I also love. I haven't
seen Mackie is much outside the MCU but the dude's got serious charisma. It
better get another season!
Given that this is only an hour, they don't spend much time with each movie. I
have a couple of problems with this list. First, Galaxy of Terror is listed
and shouldn't be anywhere near here. Second, Troll is on here and not Troll
2?!?
Movies
I'm lumping these all together for posterity's sake. They carry on the show
and don't feel like a lame attempt to recapture something that was great. The
third one leaned a bit harder into the comedy than usual but it was also a
little different story-wise.

Whether or not you've seen it, odds are that if you're reading this blog,
you've at least heard of the infamous made for TV Star Wars Holiday Special
that aired exactly one time ever. This documentary takes a look behind the
scenes by talking to people that worked on it. There's also interviews with
celeb Star Wars fans and a brief glimpse into the world of TV variety shows of
the 70s, which is essential to understanding how this thing came into being.
Speaking of Star Wars, did you know Carrie Fisher was originally cast to play
Clue's Miss Scarlet? This doc is a more of an amateur production but the fact
that he got to interview so many of the cast is pretty awesome. If you love
Clue, this is obviously a no-brainer.
Based on the trailer (and having watched the movie), I have to assume this was
intentionally made to be a "bad" movie. It's like the cast and crew of a soft
core porn decided to make a "real" movie. There's a fine line to walk when you
try to do an homage to bad movies and I feel like this doesn't quite get
there. Did I mention there's a lot of boobs?
Rating: 4/10
And on the flip side, you have something like this which just hits all the
right buttons for me. I can't believe these two had the same director! They
knew exactly what movie they were making here and went all in on it. A lot of
the monsters would look at home in 80s Doctor Who. It's got all the
-splotations: black, sex, and...Lovecraft?
Rating: 6/10
This movie is just so damn weird and crazy. I love it! Alex Winter and Jonah
Ray Rodrigues are both fantastic and Winter is just insane inside the Vlad
character. I don't think this will appeal to everyone but my money is on it
gaining cult status down the road.

No movie in this franchise should be TWO AND A HALF HOURS. I swear this series
has the most convoluted timeline in cinema history. I've seen time travel
movies that don't cross back into their own timeline as much. Diesel has
become a drag but counterpoint to him is Momoa who is playing a character in
an SNL skit that comes on after Weekend Update. The action scenes are fun and
some are just funny but not in a good way. And what the hell is Rita Moreno
doing in here?!?

This is the worst creepypasta I've heard. You go in an elevator with at least
10 floors and then go to certain floors in a particular order to summon a
ghost. This ghost is clearly not concerned about getting her story out there.
It's a lot less effort to stay home and chant Bloody Mary in front of a
mirror. There is something that could be interesting here with crossing into
the ghost world, but it needs to be done better.

From the director that brought you such classics as Deathsport, Rock n Roll
High School, and...Heartbeeps? I feel like this is something I would have
taped from cable and enjoyed in the 80s but watching it today it's like they
loaded a shotgun with spaghetti and shot it at a wall. The director describes
it as having 1500 punchlines and 1000 jokes. It's just as much about the
musical acts as the (intended) comedy but most of the songs don't click for me
personally.

Based on Lovecraft's "The Thing on the Doorstep", it's supposed to be an
homage to 80s era Stuart Gordon horror but it just didn't land right for me.
Maybe I would have enjoyed it more when I was a teen. My takeaway is that it's
about a horny entity that body hops bodies to have sex? Heather Graham and
Barbara Crampton are both pretty good and how's that for a team-up?

I knew next to nothing about this going in but having a toe in the pop culture
pool, you can't have escaped this franchise. I feel like they tried to do too
many things and ended up not doing any one particularly well. Being accessible
to a young fan base means limits on violence and the main character's family
drama is mostly boring when it is the focus. Willy's Wonderland may be the
knock off FNAF, but it's a hell of a lot more fun!
