It feels like it's been more than a few months since I first caught wind of KidRobot's Dungeons & Dragonis Mystery Mini series. After waiting and waiting to see them pop up at a local store, I deicded to snag a couple online.
As far as blind packed figures go, I felt they're a little pricey. But I say that as someone that has no clue what KidRobot figs are going for right now. Most places I found online have them around $15. I ended up ordering from ToyWiz who had them at $13.99. Plus they gave a first time sign up bonus of 5% off. They also have series 2 up for pre-order so I guess I'll be grabbing a couple more!
Here are the contents and odds for Series 1. If you're not familiar with these creatures, they're all based on the artwork from the original AD&D Monster Manual. That original art is what gives them their interesting, slightly weird style. As you'll see, they basically took the illustration and turned it into a 3D figure. And if I had planned this post out better, I would have taken the pics from the same angle as the illustrations.
Personally, I was hoping for the Dragon or Rust Monster as those stand out for me and take me way back to flipping through the Monster Manual when I first got into D&D . They're just certain ones that have stuck with me. I also like Mimics but prefer them showing off a lot of teeth. So, what did I get?
First up is a wicked Mind Flayer! I do like these guys too just because they're weird. How can you not like creepy mouth tentacles?
You want to keep your distance from these guys because if a tentacle latches on to you, it will try to take your brain out of your skull! They also have a nasty psionic blast.
Another tentacled monstrosity! The Displacer Beast is another iconic monster for me and it recently popped up in the D&D movie. You do not want this feline as a house pet with it's twin tentacles and six legs.
It's called a Displacer Beast because it can make itself look like it's somewhere that it's not, making it harder to attack...and avoid!
While there were others I would have preferred, I'm definitely happy with the ones I got! Truthfully, I'd be happy with any of them. It's such a shot of nostalgia to see these figures leap off the page. Just looking at the stat blocks gives me a feeling I can't quite describe.
Now that I've got them in hand, I think the price is well worth it if you're an old school D&D fan or just like weird monsters in general.
These look like a lot of fun. Too bad these are getting so expensive as well; kind of tough when it's a blind box. Still, they look so cool.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I'm only grabbing a couple from each series. Between the blind box and the rarity of some, it would probably be cheaper to pay secondary prices to complete a set.
