Step into the woeful game of Wednesday, where darkness reigns and colors
cause allergic reactions. To prevent breaking out in hives and having the
flesh peel off you bones, you'll use your innate selfishness and stubborn
tendencies to collect Deliciously Dark Cards and repel horrible Putrid Color
Cards.
Wednesday The Card Game is the first orignal game based on the Addams Family
inspired Netflix series. There is another card game called Wednesday:
Creatures & Outcasts that will also be releasing soon. Whether it turns
out to be good or bad, I can't pass up any game based on the Addams Family!
They did a fangtastic job with the packaging. Fans of the show will instant
recognize her dorm window that contrasts her personality with that of her roommate, Enid Sinclair, who is just as much into the colorful as Wednesday is
into the drab and dreary.
The exterior is a cardboard slipcase with a cutaway to show the window. One
thing to look out for is the way the slipcase is taped to the box. Make sure
you completely cut through the tape before trying to remove the slipcase,
otherwise you might end up tearing away the box a little like I did.
The two halves of the box slide open to reveal the card game. This is one of
those times where I wish I put the time in to figure out how to make a decent
video because this would be really cool to show off unboxing style.
The box contains 70 cards and a rules sheet.
The cards look great and have a sort of fortune teller look to them. They are
larger than your standard playing cards and may actually be Tarot sized but I
didn't have a deck handy to compare them. They have a shiny silver foil
coating on the back and around the edges which looks nice but I think it also
causes the cards to bow. I've seen the same thing happen with trading cards.
The coating also comes off a little and will get on the cards and your hands.
Wednesday would not be amused.
The cards are well done art, mostly depicting scenes from the show. The scenes are appropriately woeful if dark or more joyous if color.
Let's see if I can briefly, and coherently, explain how the game is played!
The goal is to have the most points at the end of the game. Cards have a
numerical value with dark cards adding to your score and color cards lose you
points.
Each round, one person is Wednesday and gets her card to denote that. Players
are dealt a hand of three cards. Wednesday flips the top card of the deck and
each player adds a card from their hand face up. Wednesday collects the cards
and adds one card from their hand secretly. They then order the cards face
down from lowest value to highest, regardless of color/dark.
Players take turns selecting one of the face down cards and reveal it in front
of them, adding to or reducing their score accordingly. Hands are refilled to
three and Wednesday passes to the next player. There are also Rules cards that
are revealed at the start of each round which may change who you pick a card
for. If you're picking for another player, you may just want to give
them a color card! The game ends once everyone has been Wednesday.
Gameplay seems like it could be fun, especially when there are rounds where you're having to choose a card to give to someone else. Will you end up helping or hurting their score? The colorful vs the dreary theme fits Wednesday perfectly and the presentation gets an A-. The minus is for the silver foil flecks that will be all over your hands after playing.
