Monthly Media Recap - April 2022

Can you believe it? We're halfway to Halloween already!

Streaming

The Witcher (S2, Netflix)
It felt like there were fewer monsters this season but the ones that were there were great. On the other hand, the story sucked me in and got me more involved with the characters. Can't wait for season 3!

Two Sentence Horror Stories (S2, Netflix)
I think there was a little improvement with the quality of episodes over last season. One story features a trans high school student that is being bullied. I'm not surprised the CW did this of any network but it was cool to see.

Movies

Choose or Die (2022, Netflix)
This is an odd beast. I was totally on board with a killer text adventure game because I'm old enough to remember when those were the pinnacle of gaming. Even if some of it didn't make sense, I really liked what they were doing. Unfortunately, the trope they pull out for the boss fight is something that you usually use for comedic effect so it kind of undercut the situation for me.

Rating: 6/10

For something that was put together for the 40th anniversary, I was expecting a lot more. Sure, it's got some good content but at the same time it's uneven in what it covers. I guess I was hoping more for a "making of" and a little less "how it came to be". It goes from the initial ideas all the way up to the chestburster scene and then spends a ton of time on that one scene. No doubt it's an iconic film moment but I wanted a least something about the full grown Alien costume.

Metal Lords (2022, Netflix)
When I first saw the promos for this, I thought it was going to be a series so I was a little let down that it's "only" a movie. It doesn't really do anything new for the teen coming of age genre itself but I can't remember seeing one before about kids in a metal band. I really liked the main kids and there's some fun cameos for metal fans.

Rating: 8/10

I've been hearing about this for years and finally got around to seeing it. It absolutely deserves its reputation as a balls out action movie. It doesn't take long to get rolling and once it does, it barely lets up. The end "boss fight" went on so long I was having They Live "Put on the glasses" flashbacks.

Rating: 8/10

Titanic 666 (2022, Tubi Original)
From The Asylum, creators of such memorable flicks as Transmorphers, Atlantic Rim, and Sharknado comes a horror film about the voyage of Titanic 3 released on the anniversary of the actual Titanic disaster. I'm not even going to justify this with a trailer for you. These are the same people that were known for their horrible SyFy Original movies and this is up (down?) there with the worst of them. Just slam your head into a block of ice, it will save you some pain. It does have the best line in movie history though: "I can't control...the controls!"

Rating: 2/10

This mock documentary plays like an overlong Unsolved Mysteries episode. It's about 90% interviews and 10% found/recovered footage from the missing guy's camera. You could watch the trailer and then the last 30 minutes of the movie and not miss anything. I saw reviews raving about how scary the ending is but aside from one good jump scare, it didn't really do it for me.

Rating: 5/10

I love the original movie. I saw Bogus Journey when it came out and didn't like it as much and still need to revisit it. While it was weird coming back to Bill & Ted at this point in their lives, it all works. You can tell everyone was doing this because they love the characters and not just a cash grab. I would watch an entire movie with Billie and Thea as the main characters. Brigette Lundy-Pain absolutely kills it as Ted's offspring.

Rating: 8/10

After reading Kerry Conran's fantastic Sky Captain and the Art of Tomorrow, I had to give this a rewatch. I fell in love with this movie from the first trailer and after reading the book, I love it that much more. When this came out, I was really hoping it was going to jump start a new age of pulp adventure movies. If you somehow haven't seen this and you're a fan of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, or anything in that vein, do yourself a favor and see it!
