Monthly Media Recap - August 2021

Well, this may be a record setting Recap month! It could be the fewest number of movies and also a month with no horror movies. I did watch an 8 hour horror series, but no movies. Crazy!

Series

Bad Batch (2021, Disney+)
I've been watching it every week but haven't mentioned it yet as I was waiting to have an opinion on the whole season. It did feel a little like The Mandalorian as the crew was doing odd jobs and running into characters from other shows. But I trust Filoni knows what he's doing and I'm really into exploring the Rise of the Empire time period.

Gilmore Girls (S4, Netflix)
Still solid and entertaining. Sean Gunn should have at least been nominated for some kind of best supporting weirdo award.

Brand New Cherry Flavor (2021, Netflix)
I didn't know much about this other than it was a horror series but that's enough to get me to jump in! It really feels like it could have been a season of the anthology series Channel Zero, which I loved. You're not really sure where this is going at any given moment and there's just this weirdness to it that makes it memorable. The ending was a little anti-climactic but that final ep had a scene that had me squirming in my seat. No easy feat!

Movies

Jolt (2021, Amazon Prime)
Kate Beckinsale can still kick ass even when given a pretty standard by-the-book action movie script. Her character has a shock-inducing vest to suppress her intermittent explosive disorder (overreacts to minor annoyances with violence) so it makes this sort of a reverse Crank. There's some fun action scenes and it seems like they're setting this up for a possible sequel which I don't know if it's really needed.

Rating: 6/10

Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man (1951)
I own, and have watched, all the original Universal Invisible ___ movies and somehow have never seen this one. Abbott and Costello have been a favorite of mine since I was a kid and their vaudeville shtick is just as funny today. Considering the movie is 70 years old, the effects look great. Sure you can see certain things but other effects are pretty amazing.

Once Upon a Spy (1980, Full movie on YouTube)
Ted Danson is a computer genius forced into the field with sexy agent Mary Louise Weller (Mandy from Animal House) to stop Christopher Lee's evil shrink ray plan. Did I mention Lee has a motorized wheelchair equipped with rockets? Any 80s kid that saw this probably loved it. It's on-par with Saturday morning fare at the time but as a pilot for a prime time series, it falls a little short. It checks off all the Bond tropes as best a made for TV movie can and isn't without some fun. Check out the intro credit sequence above.

Gunpowder Milkshake (2021, Netflix)
Knowing Karen Gillan from Doctor Who, I don't usually think "action" despite her being in the Jumanji movies and playing Nebula in the MCU. This will definitely make me think of her as an action person now! She is great to watch in this. Among the fantastic fight scenes is what has to be the most brutally comedic one I've ever seen! It feels like it was based on a comic and is just short of having a vibe that would make me absolutely love it. If you like action, definitely give this a watch but maybe watch the trailer first because it's a little on the violent side.

Rating: 8/10

This isn't a movie, but it's worth mentioning!
Thanks to the Purple Stuff Podcast for turning me on to this television gem. Not only did I not know this was a thing, but there's more than one! Hosted by Robert Englund, this is a real treat of a time capsule to behold. If you're a horror fan, this is something you need to see. Still not sure how Phyllis Diller ended up in here with the likes of Jason, Chucky, and the Cryptkeeper.

    3. I have yet to see the Wick movies but have heard awesome things. I keep seeing them on basic cable but if I’m gonna watch it, it’s not going to be an edited version.
