Thundarr the Barbarian Funko Pops

Shortly after Funko started cranking out Pop figures, I had my heart set on ones based on my favorite Saturday morning cartoon, Thundarr the Barbarian. While I kept it in mind that they may never happen, over the years I figured they'd start running out of things people were nostalgic for and eventually they would come and they finally have...sort of.

Back in February, Funko announced all the exclusives for their Spring 2021 VirtualCon and among them were these three I had been waiting on for years. Yes, my most wanted Pops were coming but they were going to be an online exclusive. In the span of a few seconds I went from elation to presuming I'd never actually see these at a decent price.

A couple weeks later, I saw something about being able to register ahead of time to order the figures. The only catch was you had to have been signed up two weeks before I found this info. Like Thundarr, I was going to fight on ignoring any obstacles in my way!

I set a reminder for when the con exclusives were going on sale, jumped online, and was able to snag them before they sold out! The Lords of Light had smiled down on me!

Because they were only being sold as a set, I thought they'd be coming together in one box. I'm really happy that they went with individual boxes for them so we'd get glorious full body art for each character.

The sides and back feature the iconic shipwreck and split moon from the show's opening theme. And yes, I had the theme running through my brain the whole time I was doing these photos.

There's a couple other characters that would be pretty cool to see in Pop form, especially Gemini the Wizard with his rotating two-faced head, but that's going even more niche.

Ookla the Mok has a big old mane around hid head (as he should!) so you can barely see his chest or left arm. I can just about hear his weird growling when I look at him. There's no doubt he's a Funko Pop but they did a great job combining that with his animated look.

Princess Ariel is ready to go with magic blasting from her hands. She's the only one that comes with a plastic stand. I always loved that she was the smart one of the group and knew all about old Earth.

And of course, the guy whose name is the title of the show: Thundarr the Barbarian and his fabulous Sun Sword! I know they've done Pops with light up features and I hope they decide to go that route with him one day. While you're at it, let's pop the sword sound in there too, huh?

Some might say Thundarr had rocks in his head because he wasn't too smart. Well, this Pop has got...something in his head. You can shake him like a baby rattle. I'm not sure what's in there and I'll probably never find out. One thing I'm pretty sure of though, it's not shrimp tails.

    1. Thanks! Yeah, I don't know that they'd ever venture beyond the main 3. I would love to see Super 7 (or someone) do some action figures.

  3. That's awesome you were able to score these. I was only after the MOTU stuff from that sale and I managed to get the everything except the Kobra Khan and Spikor Pez set which I snagged on ebay recently at a decent price. That's nice they put it up as a set so you didn't have to waste time adding multiple items and risking one item selling out.

    1. Wow, that never occurred to me. I would have been crushed if that happened. I imagine most people would pick up Thuundarr if they were sold as singles.
